Frenigy

Project Outline

What?

Our project involves creating a social energy-monitoring system, which allows people to keep track of their electricity usage in their homes, and understand it in terms of their online and real-world communities. What is normal energy consumption? And how can you, and your friends, make simple but active changes to make the world’s energy consumption more sustainable? We will be building a system that helps you answer these kinds of questions online, through different websites like facebook and twitter, or through our very own website – whatever fits most conveniently into your already busy life!

Currently, we would like to integrate the Frenigy system with the following services

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. Frenigy Website
  4. … where else would you like it?

Why?

The overall outline is to partially address the United Nations Seven Millenium Goals, which are:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria,and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

As outlined in the What section, we’re concentrating on goal 7, which has the aim of ensuring environmental sustainability. We’re doing this by trying to encourage people to use less electricity, which will in turn reduce the environmental overheads caused by generation.

If you would like more information on the UN’s Development Goals, visit their website.

Another fantastic reason to get involved is to save money. Just remember – the less electricity you use, the less you’ll have to pay your energy provider.

Where?

We’re based in the Computer Science Department of Swansea University. In particular, we are based in the FIT Lab (Future Interaction Technologies), which primarily focuses on research topics surrounding the interaction between humans and computers. Who?

We’ve got a whole page about the team over here – why not have a look?

…and a timescale?

We’re aiming to get a working system up and running within the next few weeks. You could either check back soon, or sign up to our mailing list.
